TUITION CENTER

It was started as one of the Centenary Projects of the Church in the year 2005 and it is fully funded and supported by the Church.

It is a Tuition Centre mainly to help the underprivileged Children living across the Road (Poonamallee High Road) at Dr. Santhosh Nagar (Egmore, Chennai – 600 008 – maintained by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board), in their studies and ultimately to reform the community.

The children who are economically poor and socially backward are admitted.  The fathers of these children work as construction workers or daily-wage labourers or auto rickshaw drivers or watchmen while the mothers work as house maids.

Classes are conducted in the evenings from 6.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday.  Students studying in V std. to XII std. are admitted.  Focus is on teaching English, Mathematics, Science and Social science.  Most of the children are studying in Chennai (Corporation run) Schools and Govt. Aided Schools.

The classes are handled by the Volunteers/Teachers from the Church. They come Voluntarily and sacrificially, spending their own resources.  They come either one or two or three days in a week to take classes.  Due to non-availability of teachers for certain subjects for higher classes, few teachers have been appointed from outside on a consolidated pay.  Currently 19 Volunteers/Teachers are helping in this project.

The Centre was re-opened for the Academic Year, 2019-20 on 6th June, 2019.   The present (October 2019) strength is 33 (15 boys & 18 girls).

Everyday snacks are given to them before they go to the classes and food packets at the end.

The children are benefitted very much through these classes.  Visible changes have taken place in the lives of the children. These children attend Tamil Bible Classes, also conducted by the Church on Saturdays.

Many of the past students have gone for higher education.  The Church has supported them financially through Church Scholarships.  Some have completed their studies.  Some are employed and have started to support the family.  Statistics currently available indicate that 10 are pursuing higher education (B.D.S. – 1, B.Com. – 5, B.Sc. (Viscom) – 1, B.Sc.(CS) – 2, DMLT – 1) and 13 have completed their higher education (U.G. – 9, Diploma – 1, ITI – 3).  Few of the Commerce graduates were assisted to get trained in Tally and GST accounting & filing.

Kindly continue to uphold these underprivileged children and the ministry of the Centre in your prayers.
